Students Awarded CARISTEM Scholarships

Students Luis Herran (left) and Allen Pottinger (right) were the first two recipients of the CARISTEM scholarship award. The award granted both students $1,000 each toward tuition.

The Social Stitch & CARISTEM founder, Stacey J. Oddman MD (pictured in the center), says “Once upon a time, I was just like them. My only wish is for the CARISTEM Scholarship to become a sustainable endowment in order to continue to educate and empower future STEM professionals who reflect the multicultural communities of S. Florida.”

Luis was born in Cuba and is currently a third-year student pursuing a biomedical engineering degree. Allen is a biology/pre-med major who aspires to become a psychiatrist. Like many other FIU students, both are driven and striving to obtain a higher education, not only to uplift themselves but their families and communities as well.

If you would like to contribute to the fund, you can do so by clicking here. You will then be taken to the donation site at FIU to complete your donation. Be sure to click on “Stacey J Oddman MD CARISTEM” under Designations.

Remember, ANY amount counts! If we can get 20 people to donate just $35/month for a year, 4 students(instead of 2) could be awarded $1000 each! (Donations are tax-deductible and go directly to FIU’s Foundation Board which a non-profit entity).
